- Title
Tape-Based Backup Of Data Seen Unreliable.
- Authors
Marshall, Jeffrey; Heffes, Ellen M.
- Abstract
The article discusses the findings from an online survey concerning database backup management. Seventy-five percent of the respondents indicated that their firms suffered unrecoverable loss of data they thought was successfully backed up to tape. More than half of those surveyed said they encountered unreadable tapes when they tried to retrieve data. Over 60% said they back up remote offices to ensure business continuity in the event of a disaster. Respondents listed data recovery-focused features they found effective. They included keeping the latest backup version locally on a disk and encryption for data while "in flight" and "at rest."
