- Abstract
The article focuses on a proposed parametric density estimation technique representing radiance making use of a hierarchical Gaussian mixture, noting the use of a progressive and accelerated form of the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm to get the coefficients of the said mixture. It cites that the method can be considered as a form of volumetric photon mapping. An implementation based on a hierarchical ray tracing and a fast splatting approach that is capable of interactively rendering animated volume caustics is also shown.
