- Abstract
This essay reviews books and essays in the field of film theory published in and around 2008. The first section, ‘Cinema Under the Influence’, looks at a group of books that do not share common themes or concerns but rather represent some important efforts to link history and film. While not film histories per se they each take us further into the rich ground where history, culture, and the philosophic imagination meet and inform the appreciation of the cinema. Authors include P. Adams Sitney, Anton Kaes, Stefan Andriopoulos, Malcolm Turvey, Noah Isenberg, and David Campany. The second part, ‘The New Spectatorship, on Affect and Complicity’, reviews new work on cinematic spectatorship and on the film philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. Authors include Michele Aaron, Lisa Cartwright, Jennifer Barker, Alison Griffiths, Paola Marrati, Patricia Pisters, and Patricia MacCormack. This chapter is divided into two sections: 1. Cinema under the Influence, divided thematically into Visionary film, Weimar film and visual scepticism; 2. The New Spectatorship, or, Affect and Complicity looks at the direction of new theories of spectatorship emerging from recent film theorists. The first is by Lisabeth During; the second is by Deborah Levitt.
