- Abstract
This article examines how digitization and mediatization are changing public communication and its conceptual understanding. It emphasizes that there is no uniform definition of "publicity" and that these concepts are multidimensional, heterogeneous, and fluid. A continuum model for digital publics is proposed, ranging from dyadic communication to multi-party communication. Four key aspects for the linguistic analysis of digital publics are highlighted: communicative construction, technical and social possibilities, diversity of addressing, and practices of digital community building. The text deals with digital publicness and digital communication. It emphasizes that digital communities can be seen as communities of practice that have a shared understanding of digital communication practices. Differences between digital and analog communication are highlighted, such as the different roles of producers and recipients, as well as the difficulty of distinguishing authors and communication managers. The contributions of the thematic issue deal with the characteristics of digital public communication. It is also noted that digital publics are a dynamic and changing construct shaped by ideas, evaluations, and expectations. The text also describes various dimensions of digital publicness, such as reach, participation, addressing, visibility, relevance, availability, and interpretive authority over content. The text addresses the topic of digital publicness and its different types. It is noted that persistent communication in digital spaces can potentially be used in new contexts to distort meaning. Internet meme culture is mentioned as an example of remixing principles and the danger of distortion of meaning. It is also noted that some digital publics are subject to curation or moderation. The text also includes a tabular overview of the contributions of the thematic issue, listing the subject matter, platform, data type, methodology, and central findings of each contribution.
