- Abstract
In the book "Between Globalism and Democracy: Political Economy in the Late Neoliberalism" by Wolfgang Streeck, the relationship between globalization and democracy is examined. Streeck argues that democratic capitalism is at an impasse and cannot move towards further deepening of international supra- or super-statehood, nor towards democratic nationalism. Instead, he advocates for a sovereign, small to medium-sized nation-state as a way out to preserve democracy. The book analyzes the crisis of the neoliberal globalization path, the normative dimension of democracy, and criticizes anti-democratic projects such as global governance and the technocratic supra-statehood of the EU. Streeck proposes a "Keynes-Polanyi state" that can socially embed capitalism and regain control over the economy. The author criticizes Streeck's argumentation for the Keynes-Polanyi state as the only democratic option. They argue that the dimension of statehood itself should always be part of democratic processes, especially in the face of problematic national border regimes. The author also points out that Streeck's analysis does not sufficiently consider the dangers of national democratic systems for minorities and marginalized groups. Furthermore, they criticize Streeck's diagnosis of global governance and argue that political shaping beyond the nation-state is necessary. The author also emphasizes the limited focus of the analysis on the EU and the inadequate consideration of the role of China and other states in the Global South. Despite these criticisms, the author praises Streeck's analysis as convincing and valuable for the debate on democracy-hostile neoliberalism.
