- Authors
Kandeler, Riklef; Ullrich, Wolfram R.
- Abstract
The article discusses the symbolism of several wild lily varieties. Frescos believed to have been made between 1600 and 1500 BC and found in a high-class villa in Amnisos, Crete in Greece feature Lilium (L.) candidum adjacent to step-like bands of the top of a wall, which are said to indicate the landlord's claim for a noble lifestyle. The white lily also became associated with the Virgin Mary, symbolizing purity of soul and chastity.
