- Abstract
Shakespeare and the Politics of Nostalgia: Negotiating the Memory of Elizabeth I on the Jacobean Stage. As with chapter one, Tsukada refuses to leave readers with the impression that the ideological shifts from Cleopatra to Caesar or Elizabeth I to James I were simple. Cleopatra is presented as a militant queen, just as Elizabeth I was sometimes presented against Catholic Spain; Antony is presented as Cleopatra's noble knight, just as Elizabeth I's courtiers were presented during their lifetimes.
