- Abstract
The article looks at the structural factors that shape that effects of the opioid epidemic on pregnant women and infants in the U.S. The factors include employment, the mental health workforce, and rates of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Also discussed are the prevalence of opioid addiction in rural communities and the need to renew efforts for preventing, detecting and treating opioid use disorders among childbearing women.
