This paper has shown there is an under representation of universities in receiving federal applied social science research funds by comparison to federal support of the academic community in basic social science research A well reformed sociological profession might profitably reduce this underrepresentation The academic community is cautioned to pay heed to some perceptions, on academic in some agencies, of the disadvantages of undertaking important research with academicians If the academic community moves toward increasing its participation in applied research, it should take care to execute research projects in a fashion which will dispel the negotiative perceptions, found in many federal applied research agencies about under taking important research projects which universities.
