- Abstract
In recent years schools have experiences shootings, suicides, gang activity, violence, disasters, abuse and many other tragedies, which seems increasing rather than decreasing. There is therefore a need for safer schools and interventions that can help students, faculty and staff reduce their fears and change their perceptions of school safety. Many studies have explored the role of school psychologists' in school safety challenges throughout the United States. Research demonstrates that little to no literature exists that would effectively provide guidance for school professionals. Design: Sixty elementary schools and thirty high schools were randomly selected from a master list of Saudi Arabia Riyadh-area elementary and high schools to participate in this study. A total of 302 participants were surveyed, about two-thirds of whom (202) were male. Of the 302 participants, 48% were counselors, 32% were teachers, and 6% were principals. Safe school inventory, crisis and training competency survey were conducted. The current study researches these school professionals' views of school safety and crises in selected elementary, middle, and high schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the surrounding region, including schools in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Results: More than 40% of the Saudi Arabian school professionals surveyed, had never had any training in response to school crisis interventions and more than 60% of school professionals felt that their schools were inadequately prepared to respond, should a school crisis occur. Conclusion: This study thus provides valuable insight into school professionals concerns, and recommendations to improve school safety in Saudi Arabia.
