- Title
The Global Atlas of Helminth Infection: Mapping the Way Forward in Neglected Tropical Disease Control.
- Authors
Brooker, Simon; Hotez, Peter J.; Bundy, Donald A. P.
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of accurate and up-to-date maps in the control of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). It highlights the need for strong evidence-based approaches and optimal targeting of mass drug administration (MDA) to communities with the highest prevalence of infection. The article also emphasizes the importance of new diagnostic tools and mapping technologies in improving the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of NTD control. It introduces the Global Atlas of Helminth Infection (GAHI), a project that aims to provide open access to up-to-date information on the distribution and prevalence of NTDs. The GAHI website will launch on August 12, 2010, and will allow users to visualize survey data, predictive risk maps, and control planning maps for each country. The article concludes by highlighting the potential benefits of accurate and up-to-date maps in decision-making, estimating disease burden, and planning national control programs for NTDs.
