- Title
Summer Habitat Use by Snowshoe Hare and Mountain Cottontail at Their Southern Zone of Sympatry.
- Authors
Melaney, Jason L.; Frey, Jennifer K.
- Abstract
The article provides information on a study that assessed habitat use of snowshoe hare and mountain cottontail in subalpine conifer forests at their southern point of sympatry in the Southern Rocky Mountains. It describes the study area. It documents the distribution of snowshoe hare in New Mexico during July-August 2001 and May-August 2002. It demonstrates that snowshoe hare prefer stands that provide dense, horizontal understory foliage cover. It reveals factors that indicate the importance of high-elevation, closed-canopy spruce-fire forests to snowshoe hare.
