The Stained Glass Closet: Celibacy and Homosexuality in the Church of England to 1955.
- Authors
JONES, TIMOTHY
- Abstract
The article analyzes the stance of the Church of England towards both celibacy and homosexuality, along with the presence of homosexuality among the Church's clergy. The process in which the Church gradually came to perceive homosexuality as a legitimate form of sexual identity is documented by the author. To this extent, the development of medical understandings of homosexuality is also discussed. The relationship of the English Catholic Church to understandings of both hetero and homosexuality is also analyzed. The Church of England's support of gay law reform is examined in light of this history.
