- Abstract
The anonymous light opera San Javier grande en El Hito is one of several Baroque pieces dedicated to the figure of St. Francis Xavier, but in it the Navarrese Saint does not appear as a dramatic character. It is rather a work dedicated to exalt his power as a miracle-worker, after the plague unleashed in the year of 1695 in the small town of El Hito (Cuenca). This light opera recalls the miraculous effect caused by the arrival of a stamp of St. Francis Xavier, at the time that also refer, more briefly, other of his miracles. The work is very similar to a sacramental play, due to the presence of allegorical characters, agents of good and evil, which help and hinder, respectively, to the central characters: St. Francis Xavier and the Devil, declared enemies.
