- Abstract
This article introduces the Indigenous research perspectives of four Native faculty who have engaged their colleagues in the College of Education (COE) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) toward a deeper understanding of the relationship among research, sovereignty, and honoring the integrity of tribal nations. The article is a theoretical/conceptual presentation of the multiple factors and conditions that affect Indigenous research and the implications for working with schools and communities. Specifically, the authors introduce a framework to guide research conducted in Indigenous nations in New Mexico. Major elements of the framework include (a) a historical overview of sovereignty in the context of the State of New Mexico, (b) an analysis of tribal powers within the framework of sovereignty, and (c) an overview of research guidelines. The sources for this paper emerge from individual research protocols and frameworks utilized by the four Indigenous faculty at UNM and the heartwork done with Native nations in New Mexico.
