- Authors

- Abstract
The first edition of Gabriel Ciscar's Curso de Estudios Elementales de Marina was published by the Royal Press of Madrid in 1803 in order to provide unified mathematics training at the Naval Schools of Cádiz, Ferrol and Cartagena. Ciscar's Course became an unusually longlasting nautical text, as all four volumes --Arithmetic, Geometry, Cosmography and Piloting--were repeatedly reprinted throughout the 19th century. This paper describes the genesis of this important work, studies the contents of the two volumes on mathematics, and considers their adequacy both to the 19th-century teaching trends and to the Navy specific needs.
