- Abstract
The article explores the librettistic effort of Austrian author Stefan Zweig in the libretto "Die schweigsame Frau." The libretto is carefully structured with acts of approximately equal length and parallel scenes in each act. The most compelling and revelatory scene in the opera was then extended duet of characters Morosus and Aminta, illustrating that the poignant loneliness of old age lies at the center of the work. In his analysis of the opera Norman Del Mar is critical of the role of the barber and his sudden termination of the intrigue in the finale, calling this last scene and its effect on the audience, so unlikely and contrived as to leave one bewildered and openmouthed.
