- Abstract
When asked what purpose library catalogues serve, aside from listing different holdings, answers may be given from the perspective of the libraries and from a research point of view. Within the system of German academic libraries there are regionally-organized catalogues (Verbundkataloge) or those focusing on specific media such as papyri, images or coins. Others observe a chronological order (cataloguing printed books for the 16th, 17th, and 18th century) and try to establish data in high quality for every book in a German library, thus stepping in where the German National Catalogue (Deutscher Gesamtkatalog) stopped in 1943. From a research point of view, such catalogue data is ideal research data that lends itself to 'data mining' approaches. Yet German catalogues are deficient in terms of both quality and quantity. A detailed review can only lead to an improvement of the situation if the problem is recognized and means of organization and of funding are found to make the outcome of cataloguing useful for research purposes, especially for the Digital Humanities.
