- Abstract
The article discusses the Korean motion picture "Peppermint Candy," directed by Lee Chang Dong. The author suggests that the depiction of a suicide in the film and flashbacks to the main character's youth symbolize the tenuous existence of democracy in South Korea. He discusses themes of death and deja vu in the film and notes the symbolic use of trains and photographs in the film to represent memory and inevitability. He suggests the violent behavior of the film's protagonist represents negative aspects of Korean history and masculinity.
