The article discusses the portrayal of Islam and its changing place in the modern postcolonial world in Tanzanian-British novelist, Abdulrazak Gurnah's fiction. It explores how Gurnah's novels, such as "Paradise" and "Gravel Heart," depict characters who feel alienated from the spiritual aspects of Islam . It further explores how Gurnah's fiction addresses questions of spirituality, cultural legitimacy, and the changing place of Islam in the modern postcolonial world.
