- Title
The Global Phenomenon of "Humanizing" Terrorism in Literature and Cinema.
- Authors
Martin, Elaine
- Abstract
This article presents an exploration into the psychological depiction of terrorism within the social psyche and the contrary movement to contextualize and "humanize" it within European literature. The case examples of "The Robbers," by Friedrich Schiller and Heinrich von Kleist's "Michael Kohlhaas," are given wherein the terrorist character is viewed within a more sympathetic and personal perspective rather than a flatly stereotypical construction of moral evil. The importance of stressing such elements of terrorists is stressed, criticizing the errancy of over-institutionalizing political opponents.
