- Authors
Colby, Sasha
- Abstract
The author explores the relationship between archaeology as an emerging 19th century discipline and its representation in the work of French Romantic writer Théophile Gautier. The author outlines the interest in Egypt in both French 19th century culture and the French literary world, and proceeds to discuss the portrayal of Egypt and archaeology in Gautier's works, such as "The Mummy's Romance" and "Arria Marcella." The author also examines the use of archaeological texts and concerns in Gautier's works, and discusses the differences between the representation of archaeology in Gautier's fiction and poetry.
