- Abstract
This article presents a study which compares the tradition and development of the Austrian Singspiel and the German Singspiel. The intermezzo and the opera buff have been excluded in the developmental aspects of the German Singspiel, while in the Austrian Singspiel the opera buff was perceived as different from the Singspiel. Intermezzo had different effect on both the Austrian and German Singspiel. The development of the Singspiel in Germany was due to foreign influences, while in Austria it was basically indigenous. In terms of dependence on the music, the Austrian Singspiel was more dependent than the German.
