- Abstract
This paper presents a model for evaluating the contribution by arch action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams. Based on the relationship between shear and bending moment in beams, the shear resistance of a beam is explicitly resolved into two base components of the flexural action and the tied-arch action. Using the smeared truss idealization with an inclined compression chord, a cross-sectional compatibility condition is formulated between the deformation associated with the tied arch and that associated with the flexural action. The modified compression field theory is used to calculate the shear deformation of the web. From this compatibility condition, the shear carried by the arch action in cracked beams is numerically decoupled. The validity of the proposed model is examined by applying the model to some selected test beams reported in the literature.
