- Abstract
The article discusses the evolution of legends involving suicides by tunnel-building engineers, drawing on examples from the Alps and the Caucasus. The basic narrative structure of these narratives is explained and their prototypes or historical precursors in these mountain ranges are related. Changing motifs regarding the motivation for suicide are discussed with regard to their historical context, particularly Stalinism in the Soviet Union.
