- Abstract
The paper considers locum doctors not, as usual, from a professional perspective but, for the first time with a focus on their employment relations, in particular their atypical employment forms (limited contracts, temporary employment, and solo-self employment). Following our introduction and problem definition, we characterise the essential features of these new employment forms, which have increased considerably in Germany in recent years, by comparing them with the normal employment pattern. Then we present social demographic characteristics of these forms. Next we discuss whether locum doctors who are atypically employed are also exposed to risks that are frequently linked to precariousness (income, employment stability, employability, integration in social security systems). Finally, we elaborate on the collective representation of their interests.
