Wooden Slavery.
- Authors
NARDIZZI, VIN
- Abstract
The author discusses wood as a primary energy source in the pre-industrial era. He refers to a statement made by the character "Caliban" in the literary piece "The Tempest," by William Shakespeare, "there's wood enough within," indicating the indispensability of wood at that time. He presents an evaluation of the wooden age stretching from prehistory up to the time when coal replaced charcoal in the 18th century. He cites the effects of wood dependency based on case studies of the U.S., Germany and Japan, which resulted to the despoiling of woodlands.
