- Abstract
Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) is one of the commonly used forage crops in Taiwan. In response to climate change and animal needs, select Napier grass cultivars that are resistant to waterlogging and have stable yields and quality. The Fl (first filial generation) hybrid of Napier grass Taishiu No. 2 and Taishiu No. 3 were selected through individual plant selection, evaluation of flooding tolerance, and regional trials. Line 1120 met the breeding objectives that having good flooding resistance. The plant type is green with medium stem, top leaf tip height is 137.2 cm, leafto-stem ratio is 1.0, crude protein is 10.7 %, neutral detergent fiber is 61.8%, and acid detergent fiber is 36.3 %. The yield of fresh grass is 142.6 mtZha/year, which is 8.0 % higher than that of Taishiu No. 2 and 27.0 % higher than that of Taishiu No. 3. It ages slowly and is resistant to lodging. The agronomic traits and the IS SR primer analysis could distinguish line 1120 from the existing eight cultivars of napiergrass in Taiwan. Therefore, line 1120 was named after Napier grass Taishiu No.9 (NP cv.TS 9) in 2023 by the Cultivar Nomenclature Review Committee. This new cultivar can replace some imported forage and is worth promoting for planting in extreme climates.
