- Abstract
Hog hair, as one of the agricultural wastes, is a very serious problem in agriculture nowadays. Because of its hard-to-decompose structure, it has always been processed by incinerating or burying in the slaughterhouse, thus causing environmental pollution and energy loss problems. In our previous studies, we have screened out several Bacillus strains that effectively degrade hog hair and can ferment hog hair as the only carbon and nitrogen source. The characteristics of the keratinase produced were also analyzed, and the soluble protein and essential amino acids after fermentation were significantly increased. In order to further decompose hog hair, molasses were added as the carbon source, with hog hair as the nitrogen source, and found that the keratinase activity produced was higher. Animal studies have also been performed to evaluate the efficacy of using fermentation products of hog hair as substitutes for soybean meal in the feed. We cooperated with Pingtung Microbial Factory to spray the fermented product on the soybean meal with a fluidized-bed dryer, and to test whether they can improve the growth performance of broiler chickens.
