- Title
Introduction to the Special Issue on Sports Economics.
- Authors
Scully, Gerald W.
- Abstract
The first systematic economic analysis of professional sports was undertaken nearly three decades ago. Since that time, the field of sports economics has expanded to such an extent that it supports a journal devoted to it, "Journal of Sports Economics." The author shares that when he was asked to edit a special issue of Managerial and Decision Economics on sports economics, he saw it as an opportunity to bring something a little different and with a little bit of controversy to the readers of this journal. In particular, he resolved not to solicit papers in subjects where the ground had been trodden. Rather, he wanted papers that were fresh, on sound theoretical ground, and, where empirical, were careful in the econometrics.
