- Abstract
Background: The use of psychoactive substances represents the potential for harm, both from the short-term and long-term perspective. Behaviour from the period of adolescence could continue in adulthood and can affect for example mental health, tobacco use, diet, the level of physical activity and alcohol consumption. Objectives: The analysis of the development of indicators related to the use of tobacco and alcoholic products. Methods: The research sample was created in accordance with the international protocol of the study Health Behaviour in School Aged Children (HBSC) to reflect the educational system in the Slovak Republic. The data were obtained from 3 surveys of the HBSC study from the following school years: 2009/2010, 2013/2014 and 2017/2018. Results: The incidence of smoking experience is still relatively high, but there is a visible decrease in incidence by more than 20% compared to the year of 2010. This decrease, which is the part of the overall reduction in smoking incidence in Europe over recent years is in line with tobacco control strategies. In 2018 approximately two-thirds of 15-year olds (59%) had experience with drinking alcohol at least once in their lives. Conclusion: The primary prevention is the key one. Young people particularly are at risk of use of psychoactive substances because they are at the stage of life when behavioural patterns are formed. The use of psychoactive substances during the period of adolescence affects their health and well-being, it is associated with risky behaviour and contributes to the development of other health problems.
