Odysseus on the Niobid Krater.
- Authors
McNiven, Timothy J.
- Abstract
The article identifies Odysseus and other Greek mythology figures in the Greek vase painting Niobid krater. According to the author, the vase is one of the touchstones of the history of ancient Greek art. It is considered to be the earliest contemporaneous witness to the new development in mural painting in the Early Classical Period. The scene depicted on the krater is significant due to its complexity and monumental quality, as well as due to its failures as a work of art. Chrysanthos Christos identifies the man behind the hill at the top of the scene as Odysseus. He also identifies other figures in the scene including Achilles, Athena and Hektor.
