- Abstract
The article explains the restrictions facing private equity (PE) firms in the acquisition of financial institutions. The revised Federal Deposit and Insurance Corp.'s (FDIC) policy statement requires PE firms to become banking holding companies. Current political and regulatory environment is described, including the asset-quality, capital and liquidity shortfalls experienced by banks. The value that PE firms can bring to the distressed bank market is also explored.
