- Abstract
Nadine Fresco's book, "On the Death of Jews: Photographs and History," explores the use of perpetrator photographs to examine evidence, intent, and collective guilt during the Holocaust. The book focuses on a series of eight photographs known as the Šķēde or Liepāja massacre photographs, which depict the execution of Jewish men and women by German perpetrators but carried out by Latvians in December 1941. Fresco contextualizes these images alongside victim testimonies and Nazi visual propaganda, highlighting the role of photography in shaping perceptions of Jews as enemies of the German people. The book also emphasizes the need for further research into Nazi collaboration in Eastern Europe and argues for the continued visibility of these photographs as public property. While the book could have delved deeper into the multiple uses of these images over time and their role in collective memory and guilt, it is a valuable contribution to the study of Holocaust photography.
