- Title
Is Canada ready for a new veterinary college?
- Authors
Singh, Baljit
- Abstract
Canada currently has five veterinary colleges, one in Quebec and four for the English-speaking population. However, there is a shortage of veterinarians in Canada and the United States, and the opening of veterinary colleges in other countries has not alleviated this shortage. The United States has continued to open veterinary colleges, but Canada has not taken any steps in this direction. One strategy in Canada has been to rely on immigration to meet the demand for veterinarians, but Canadian veterinary colleges have largely failed to support immigrant veterinarians. Increasing capacity in Canadian veterinary colleges and opening a new college could help address the shortage of veterinarians. A new college could also have a focus on Canada's North and integrate human, animal, and ecosystem health.
