- Abstract
Objective: In this study, we examined the relationship between neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio and fatty liver, visceral fat volume (VFV), subcutaneous fat volume (SFV) and liver volume (LV) obtained by computed tomography (CT). Methods: 97 cases (58 males, 39 females mean age ± SD: 45.5 ± 1.5) who were referred for unenhanced abdominal CT examination without excessive alcohol consumption history were enrolled in this study. Two groups were selected, using special computer software and patients with fatty liver and non-fatty liver (control) groups according to densitometry values on CT scans. Each case was questioned for body mass index (BMI), diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension and dyslipidemia, and N/L ratios were recorded. VFV, SFV and LV were measured using special computer software for each subject. Results: Significant correlations were found between fatty liver and DM, VFV, SFV, BMI and LV. However, contrary to our expectations the N/L ratios of patients with fatty liver and control patients were 3.48 ± 2.6 and 3.40 ± 4.3, respectively, and the difference was statistically insignificant (p = 0.909). Patients with fatty liver were found to have higher LV compared to controls (p <0.001). Pearson correlation analysis showed insignificant correlation between N/L and liver density (p = 0.86), liver-spleen density difference (p = 0.748), LV (p = 0.75), SFV (p = 0.286) and VFV (p = 0.541). Conclusion: Unlike the literature, which found a correlation between non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and N/L, we found no correlation between simple fatty liver and N/L ratio in our study, and we believe that the use of this ratio in the early stages will not contribute to clinical data.
