- Abstract
Background: with advancing age, individuals are more susceptible to physical decline, commonly attributed to biological aging and disuse of the body. Objective: To investigate the impact of aging on physical conditions of fire. Methods: This was a longitudinal retrospective study, whose sample consisted of 38 firefighters in Maringá. They collected data from the assessments of the physical fitness of firefighters conducted in 1995, 2002 and 2012. In the first evaluation the age of survey participants ranged from 25-35 years; 36-42 in the second year and third year 43-53. The evaluation included the 12-minute walk test; evaluation of VO2 max; test run 40 seconds, bioimpedance and history. Results: The results showed decreased fitness and increased body composition of firefighters. In aerobic endurance test distance traveled in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd evaluations was 2754,1m, 2654,1m and 2274,2m and BMI obtained was 24.2; 25.7; and 27.5 respectively. Conclusion: the physical ability of firefighters has changed significantly over the years, despite the anthropometric and functional profile required for professional activity.
