- Abstract
The article explores the figure of the revolutionary mother as a feminine revolutionary subject during the formative years of early North Korean history. The author reflects on how North Korean female subjectivity incorporated Japanese and Soviet influences in forging an icon of revolutionary potential. An historical overview of motherhood in North Korea is provided to illuminate traditional gender roles before the revolutionary period. Other topics include the end of Japanese colonial rule, gender equality laws, and the mobilization of women into the workforce.
