- Abstract
This article focuses on the articles published in the 1994, second quarter edition of the periodical “Quarterly Benefits”. This issue begins with a special section on communication and investment education for 401(k) participants in the U.S. In the lead article, J. Carter Besse Jr. offers his perspective on the failure of many Americans to adequately plan for and fund their retirement. The second article provides a macroeconomic perspective of the role of salary reduction plans as retirement income vehicles. The third article deals with a potential problem faced by many 401(k) sponsors. Nennette Kress addresses the topic of helping employees to take charge of their financial future in the next article. Judy A. Bischopink and Gail Gordon Meister discuss the new U.S. Department of Labor rules under ERISA Section 404 and show how employers can use this information to take an active role in educating participants about their investments. Arlene M. Whitley provides information on a 401(k) employee education program that can be developed and managed by segregating it into four separate modules. Robert R. Falconi emphasizes that employers must acknowledge the importance of effective employee communication and illustrates the necessary communications at the time the 401(k) is set up and the ongoing programs needed after the plan has been established. Marc A. Greenberg and Maurice S. Mandel illustrate an approach to 401(k) investing. In the last article, Kristin Mumford focuses on how to narrow the universe of fund choices and evaluation criteria for picking the most appropriate fund in each case.
