- Abstract
Current reality produces inadequate school leaders. Four major issues concern public school principals' preparation: Insufficient managerial reserves; failure to identify suitable candidates; difficulties in using previous experience to as a predictor of a principal's success; dissatisfaction with preparation programs. These issues raise the need to reexamine principal preparation programs in order to replace them with a new, appropriate model, more tuned to the needs of the field, to guarantee long-term quality and professional management, and above all, suitable principals. Duke (1987) argued the common practice of turning a teacher into a principal is an ongoing process of socialization. Therefore, the more professional the organizational socialization process the more adequate and professional the principals sense of confidence in carrying out the various roles and demands of the post. Current research examines the existing Israeli principal preparation program, pointing to a need for an essential change in the preparation process beginning with the identification of the candidate, continuing on to academic and practical support, concluding with the point of functioning as a principal in practice.
