- Abstract
This article discusses the public health issues related to the recent immigration of Haitians to Brazil. Thousands of Haitian immigrants arrived in Brazil in 2010, attracted by the prospect of work in the country's growing economy. Brazil's national health system, Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), faces challenges in providing adequate medical care to the immigrants due to linguistic barriers and identifying and minimizing the risk of reintroducing infectious diseases. The article focuses on two diseases, lymphatic filariasis and cholera, and discusses the potential for their reintroduction in Brazil. The authors propose several points for consideration, including offering testing and treatment for lymphatic filariasis and considering mass screening and/or presumptive antibiotic treatment to prevent the introduction of cholera. The article emphasizes the need for collaboration between various organizations and sensitivity in conducting public health initiatives for immigrant populations.
