- Abstract
British horror has a history of objectifying women behind and in front of the camera; and many contemporary films encompass the unflattering genre trope of the monstrous-feminine. This chapter considers small studio, women-led productions, that have thus far been overlooked in scholarship, highlighting examples of women's unique and undervalued work in contemporary British horror. Drawing on the monstrous-feminine, a dialogue with independent filmmaker K. Pervaiz explains her aspirations to transcend the horror genre and these formal archetypes. Pervaiz offers new ways of thinking about the relationship between femininity and monstrousness, demonstrating the potential transformative nature of independent, woman-led filmmaking.
