- Title
CJD Prions a Surgery Risk?
- Authors
Stephenson, Joan
- Abstract
Reports on the discovery by researchers in Switzerland that prions, the proteins responsible for Creuzfeldt-Jakob disease can be detected in the muscle of affected patients. Suggestion that the surgical equipment used on these patients could transmit the virus to others since routine sterilization does not destroy prions; Call for the use of single-use needle electrodes and special protocols for biopsies.
