- Abstract
The article presents a commentary on Robert Phillipson's paper "Lingua franca or lingua frankensteinia? English in European Integration and Globalisation." According to the author, language is not entirely independent of culture and ideology. The spread of lingua franca English can be attributed to the transfer by powerful nations of their values onto less powerful ones. There are unique adaptations of the English language by specific world communities. For instance, Indian English has been adopted and stylized by one of the largest English-speaking countries in the world. A distinct variety of English is produced by the fusion of the so-called Standard English and Indian cultures that reflects the identities and thought processes of Indians around the world.
