- Abstract
This article deals with discursive promises of belonging to a meritocratic 'imagined community' in the context of migration. The question arises, which subject discourses come along with meritocratic ideals and also, which forms of appropriation of such discourses can be discovered. For further analysis, media representations of German- Iranians were reconstructed following the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourses (Keller 2011). On the other hand, biographical-narrative interviews were conducted and reconstructed following narrative analysis (Schütze 1983). In this paper, two reconstructed forms will be contrasted: (1) A rather affirmative relation to selfoptimization, which is seen as a means to legitimize oneself in an 'imagined community'. (2) A rather subversive-disruptive relation to optimization demands, which comes along with the perception of paradoxes of social expectations. For both types, inconsistencies as well as method(olog)ical challenges will be discussed in a final conclusion.
