- Abstract
Pointed bifacial artefacts are typologically distinct tools which are present in different variations along the whole Old Stone Age. We focused on a question if and why the tools had been changing through the Palaeolithic. We studied artefacts in different spatio-temporal horizons. Preliminary results of Szeletian assemblages showed quite wide variability of leaf points within the collection from one site. The database was thus further enriched with artefact data from Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Poland or Germany. A new software was used to analyse the data. The principle is to take side and front pictures of each leaf point. The software enables to convert digital images of the tool to contour lines and use them to calculate requested parameters. The main goal was to collect objective data of the artefact shape suitable for their evaluation by statistical methods. Studied tools had been intensively used. Using use-wear analysis we succeeded to prove both Szeletian leaf points and Micoquian bifacial artefacts represent multifunctional tools used not only as weapons.
