- Abstract
This article discusses a debate regarding the rise of Western European nations as colonial and industrial powers between the 1500s and the 1900s. This article responds to a debate initiated by Joseph M. Bryant in a 2006 article in this journal. The question of the economic relationship between imperialism and economic growth is framed in terms of efforts to develop reliable statistics on the subject. The role of rationalism and the development of a scientific worldview on the economic development of Western Europe is questioned. These positions are then extended to claim that imperialist violence played a significant role in the development of capitalism and democracy.
