- Abstract
The study demonstrates the efficiency of the dechlorination treatment to reduce the levels of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in dielectric oils used in the oldest transformers of an electrical substation located in the province of Los Ríos, Ecuador. The process includes sampling, laboratory analysis, experimentation, and analysis. Through a sampling, 10 dielectric oil samples were obtained from the electrical substation. In the quantitative characterization, the samples were sent to an accredited laboratory for gas chromatography to be carried out, which confirmed that only 3 samples had amounts greater than 50 ppm of PCBs. For the experimental part, the following treatments were taken into consideration: for concentration reduction of PCB together with ethanol, which acts as a catalyst in the reaction. For each test, 5 repetitions were performed to validate the process. The 3 proposed treatments reduced significant concentrations of PCB, claiming that the treatment with greater efficiency was #2, obtaining an effectiveness of 78.74%.
