- Abstract
The article discusses German lawyer and scholar Francis Daniel Pastorius, one of the founders of Germantown, Pennsylvania, focusing particularly on his work "The Beehive," a commonplace book in which he recorded his daily observations about life in the new colony where he arrived in 1683. The structuring and indexing of his commonplace book is detailed. Some of the subjects considered include bees, honey, and beekeeping; Quaker teachings and beliefs; and books available in the American colonies for Pastorius to read, including those held within his own library.
