- Abstract
The European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) and the American Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) have released new guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of aortic diseases. These guidelines, which come ten years after the previous release, cover various aspects of aortic diseases and are summarized in 36 tables of recommendations. The guidelines emphasize the recognition of the aorta as an organ in its own right and recommend endovascular treatment as the first-line intervention for many aortic pathologies. The guidelines also highlight the importance of wide consensus among professionals and advocate for a lower threshold for elective surgery on the ascending aorta. However, it is important to note that the level of evidence supporting most of the recommendations is categorized as 'level C', indicating a reliance on small cohorts of patients, retrospective analyses, and expert consensus. The guidelines also stress the need for more research in various areas of aortic disease treatment.
